She has been hailed not only by fans, but also by media around the world. “Mesmerizing,” “first-class,” “perfection,” and “a queen” are among the media’s descriptions of celebrated dancer Siudy Garrido. Today, she is recognized as a barrier-breaking artist, swirling traditional and contemporary techniques into a brand of flamenco that’s entirely her own.
In 2015 Los Angeles Philharmonics commissioned Garrido with a full score production and her own interpretation of Manuel de Falla’s Amor Brujo (Love, The Magician), Mesmerizing audiences of 4 sold out performances, conducted by Maestro Gustavo Dudamel. The same production was presented by the Aspen Music Festival, performed by the Aspen Chamber Orchestra and Siudy’s “vibrant” company, conducted by Maestro Cristian Macelaru. Flamenco collaborations includes Antonio Canales who pay’s “the Patriarch” in Siudy’s crossover production “Entre Mundos”, Juan Manuel Montoya “Farruquito” who’s been guest artist in “Flamenco Intimo” and collaborations with Jose Luis de la Paz excellent guitarist who’ve composed original music and performed in three of the companies original productions as special guest artist and composer.
Today Siudy is the Artistic Director of Siudy Flamenco Dance Theater Inc. An organization that relocated in Miami, USA as the evolution of Siudy Flamenco Ballet which had been Siudy’s Venezuelan award winning dance company for 15 years.
Garrido, began dancing at the tender age of 5 in her native country, Venezuela. She is the daughter to the celebrated dancer and instructor Siudy Quintero, who created an flamenco educational system, 50 years ago and who was honored with an award by the King of Spain, in 1996 for her work on expanding the art of Flamenco beyond its borders. Siudy’s formal dance studies initiated in her mother’s academy where she exposed to several productions presented by her mother in performing arts centers and Siudy’s first TV appearance at age 6. Three years after, at age 9, Siudy shared the stage with world famous dancer Joaquin Cortes on an original theater production called “Tormentos” in the Teresa Carreño theater in Caracas. At age 15, she moved to Spain and specialized her dance technique with renowned dance instructors such as Ciro, El Güito, Maria Magdalena, La China and Milagros Menjibar.
At age 16 – 1999, performed in the “Casa Patas” flamenco tavern-restaurant in Madrid, a singular joint known for presenting only high quality professional flamenco performances. The same year, Siudy was selected to pose for German photographer Elke Estolzenberg and “Weingarten” among 12 top Spanish flamenco dancers along with Eva Yerbabuena, Merche Esmeralda, El Güito and Joaquín Cortes. Siudy made the cover of the Calendar distributed in Japán, Brazil and Spain.
The following year, she was selected by Antonio Canales to perform as principal dancer on his dance company. Later joined Adrian Gália and Domingo Ortega as a principal dancer in specific productions.
Moved to New York City and studied contemporary dance and Jazz at Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway, enriching her dance vocabulary and searching for her own voice.
Following the footsteps of her mother and seizing the responsibility of her lineage, she has dedicated her life to spreading the love for the art of flamenco, and in search of her truthful style. Exploring new concepts of dance where her studies in classical, contemporary and jazz were infused with her flamenco origins creating a universe filled with rich movement and rhythm.
In 2000 Siudy Garrido was invited to choreograph for the Pittsburg Opera all dance material for Bizet’s classic “Carmen” and then founded her company, and since then she has created and choreographed five outstanding original productions: “Caminos Flamencos” with a wonderful debut in Disney’s Epcot Center; “En Cuerpo y Alma” (2003); “Bailaora” (2005), which received Honorable Mention of Excellence award
from the City of Caracas; “Between Worlds” (2008), which ran a limited engagement Off-Broadway New York on 2011 and was nominated for Outstanding Choreography at the Drama Desk Awards; in 2014 “Flamenco Intimo” (2013). And Recently the dance theater flamenco interpretation of Amor Brujo for Symphony orchestra. Other symphony orchestras include, The Simon Bolivar which whom she did a solo performance of “La Bervena de la Paloma”, Miami Symphony Orchestra, with which did a solo performance of “Jota” From Falla’s Three-cornered hat”and the Aspen Chamber Orchestra at the summer Music Festival and School for whom she directed and performed the full score and dance production of “Amor Brujo”
Among some of charity events Siudy’s had contributed and performed on several, highlighting the “Play for good” philanthropic summit in Palma Mallorca next to Sheila E and Chaka Kan. Special guest included members of the Spanish crown, Goldie Han, Paris Hilton, Terrence Howard and was hosted by Eva Longoria.
Siudy’s global trajectory has captured the admiration of other remarkable artists in various artistic realms; and from the popular music world, Siudy had been invited to dance in front of a sold out audience at the Madison Square Garden for “Bachata” super star Romeo Santos for the debut of world tour Formula 1. Also had shared the stage with Grammy award winning Niña Pastori, Diego Cigala and Chucho valdez and salsa great Gilberto Santa Rosa. Her likeness had been featured in music videos for several Latin pop artist including Marc Anthony and Alejandro Sanz on their first and only collaboration “Deja que the bese” and with Mexican band Maná.
Other organizations had take notice of her unique style, and Cirque du Soleil invited Siudy to teach a flamenco workshop in Las Vegas for their dancers.
Siudy Garrido continues to globalize flamenco on and off stage and has established a flamenco educational dance program, Siudy Flamenco Dance Program, while continuing her work a performing artist, choreographer and artistic director for Siudy Flamenco Dance Theater.
